The study sites have been selected to represent different conditions in Indonesia (various stages of forest cover, population density, accessibility and governance systems). In total seven villages have been chosen from three provinces: two in Central Java (Wonosobo Regency), three in West Kalimantan (Kapuas Hulu Regency) and two in Papua (Mamberamo Raya Regency).

The following research instruments, combining quantitative and qualitative methods, were developed around research question indicators.
